Boom Camp: A Week Packed with Purpose
The school holidays can leave parents asking one question: how do we keep our children busy, safe and learning while they’re out of class? At Kampala Kindergarten Association (KKA), the answer is Boom Camp.
What is Boom Camp?
Boom Camp is the flagship holiday event of KKA’s Amazon Club, our Saturday and holiday programme for children aged 3 to 12. It runs from 9am to 5pm every day, with a choice of day or boarding, and it is open to children who don’t attend KKA. Activities are grouped by age, so every child is challenged at the right level, whether they are 3 or 12.
A week of doing, not just watching
Boom Camp keeps children active and learning in five areas.
Games
Outdoors: football, netball, rope skipping, dodgeball, swimming and aerobics. Indoors: ludo, chess and cards, building strategy, patience and friendships.
Self-Help Skills
Dressing up, brushing teeth, laying the bed, and washing utensils and clothes. Independence, one task at a time.
Survival Skills
Reading and writing, computer literacy, cookery and baking, crafts, and urban farming. Skills for life.
Moral & Religious Values
Bible reading and Quran recitation, stories, drama, prayer, quizzes, counselling and guidance.
Cultural Games & Songs
Campfire evenings, traditional songs and games of low organisation that connect children to the culture around them.
How children learn
Boom Camp isn’t a classroom with the desks moved outside. Learning is hands-on and fun, so it tends to stick.
What children take home
- Practical self-help and survival skills they can use every day
- Moral and religious values, taught through stories, drama and prayer
- New friendships, and the confidence that comes with them
- A certificate of attendance to mark the week
